HONOLULU (July 29, 2008)—Costco Hawaiʻi today donated $180,000 for a new ultrasound machine for the Fetal Diagnostic Center at Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

Kapiʻolani is Hawaiʻiʼs only high-risk maternity center, performing more than 9,700 fetal ultrasounds for at-risk moms and babies each year. A specialized ultrasound is critical in monitoring a babyʼs growth in utero, identifying complications, and diagnosing fetal abnormalities. It also serves as a vital tool in performing fetal surgery while a baby is still in the womb.

Costco managers from warehouses across the state gathered at Kapiʻolani to make the presentation, which was accepted by Kapiʻolani Medical Center Chief Operating Officer Martha Smith.

Robert Loomis, general manager of Costco Iwilei, said, “Kapiʻolani plays a vital role in the health of Hawaiʻiʼs children and mothers. So when we heard that the communityʼs only high-risk maternity center had a need for a new ultrasound machine, our members and employees welcomed the chance to raise the necessary funds.” Truly a grassroots community effort, the money was raised a dollar at a time through Costcoʼs participation in the Miracle Balloon Campaign, a fundraiser for the Kapiʻolani Childrenʼs Miracle Network that was held during the month of May.

Barbara OʼRegan, a representative from Childrenʼs Miracle Network; and doctors and staff from the Kapiʻolani Fetal Diagnostic Center including Nola Faria, clinical supervisor, Dr. Ivica Zalud, medical director, and Dr. Lynnae Sauvage, maternal fetal medicine specialist, were also in attendance at the presentation.
