Jayremiah was born on July 4, three months premature, and profoundly deaf. Even the strongest hearing aids did not give him any benefit. But that would all change thanks to a hearing device and speech therapy that only Kapiʻolani could provide.

Physicians at Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children determined that Jayremiah was a good candidate for the Cochlear Implant Program, begun in 2005. A special device was implanted directly into his inner ear to stimulate the residual auditory nerves.

On Christmas Eve, 2007, Jayremiah and his family returned to Kapiʻolani to turn on his cochlear implant. For the first time, but certainly not the last, he heard sounds. With ongoing speech therapy, his parents hope that Jayremiah will soon attend school and lead a normal life.
