When youʼve undergone three open-heart surgeries, 13 interventional catheterizations, and had one pacemaker placed – all in less than a decade, you might find it hard to smile. But not 10-year-old Keegan. Heʼs traveled to San Diego, enjoys dancing and swimming, and loves playing with his little sister.

Even before he was born at Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Keegan was diagnosed, in utero, with a congenital heart defect. He would require multiple surgeries to keep his heart functioning well.

Yet, Keegan can receive much of his care right here in Hawaii. During Heart Week five times each year, world-class pediatric cardiologists and surgeons, such as Dr. John Lamberti from San Diego Childrenʼs Hospital, come to Hawaiʻi and work alongside Kapiʻolani physicians. Keegan and his family are grateful for the partnership between his Hawaiʻi and San Diego doctors.
